Kevin will talk about the impact utility works have on road users and the road asset, discuss improvements over the past 20 years and look forward to how further improvements are needed with initiatives to achieve lower impact, durable reinstatements as we transition to a net zero world.

Discover opportunities to reduce the carbon emissions from the transport system to support Net Zero goals and support Transport Scotland's world-leading commitment to reduce car kilometres by 20% by 2030.

The session will identify potential investment opportunities in infrastructure to encourage sustainable travel behaviours, improving the lives of our diverse communities and minimising carbon impact. We will use examples of applying WSP’s Carbon Zero Appraisal Framework on our transport projects ranging from small safety schemes, that include active travel improvements, to regional strategies.

Success in the decarbonisation of our highways networks can only be realised by addressing the entire asset lifecycle. Asset Management improvement programmes can place ESG goals at the centre to drive and embed long term change. ​This presentation will demonstrate how strategic goals have been translated down the line of sight to help deliver actual change to ways of working while digitising, improving governance and delivering improvements to customers. ​

Local government is fundamental to the delivery of transport that needs the meets of local communities and businesses, and reduces carbon emissions to help meet our climate change targets. Councils across Scotland are ideally placed to assess the transport needs of their areas and then holistically tailor local and regional transport plans.

A local government that is empowered with flexible and discretionary powers, such as the workplace parking levy or the option to run municipal bus services, is able to deliver sustainable and better transport that suits an individual area. However, they must be well resourced in order to explore these possibilities and provide the most benefit for the public.  

With almost twenty years of experience in unmanned aviation, Paul has extensive knowledge of the drone industry and the challenges it faces. Paul started his professional career at London Control ATC, where he worked in both operations and engineering. Subsequently, he founded leading drone training and consultancy company Consortiq.

Paul is also part of a number of trade bodies and national authorities which support the development of drone regulation. Paul previously held the position of legislation director for UK trade body ARPAS, and has contributed to working groups for the UK government, ICAO, and various national aviation authorities.

Gordon will explore the work that Scottish Water and its delivery partners are doing to progress delivery of low carbon construction.

Maintaining the road network in a safe and serviceable condition that is resilient to the impact of climate change, is vital to support a modern successful economy.

Increased surface water flooding is already recognised as a primary risk to the integrity of the network. The condition of roadside drainage is a key element in managing that risk. With value for money challenges as well, we need to imagineer smarter ways of taking care of our roads.

Recycling the filter media within roadside filter drains is one of these smart solutions.

Carnell’s STONEmaster solution recycles material in a single shift on site reducing the need to transport material off site, or quarry and bring new aggregate to site.

The benefits are wide ranging. Vastly reduced lorry movements, reduces the plant-people interface on site, reduces the volume of construction traffic, and reduces the number of lorry drivers required. Couple these benefits with the CO2 savings and cost savings, and the STONEmaster solution, that was used on the A96 earlier this year, is definitely a winner in making of network more resilient to the effects of climate change.
