Michael McDonnell

Director, Road Safety Scotland

Michael began his career as a primary school teacher, working for seven years in that sector.  However, most of his working life has been spent in road safety, working as a local road safety officer in Strathclyde, before moving to RoSPA in 1990 as Road Safety Manager (Scotland).

In 2004, he took over as Director of Road Safety Scotland (RSS). RSS is responsible for developing road safety learning resources for use mainly in schools, and for behavioural change campaigns tackling the main causes of harm on our roads.

Many early road safety initiatives were done because people thought they were good ideas, but Michael is an advocate of an evidence-led approach to road safety. He has tried to ensure all work undertaken by RSS is informed by evidence and, particularly on the campaign side, guided by robust behavioural change principles.
