Director Living Streets Scotland

Stuart Hay is Head of Scotland for the National Walking Charity Living Streets. He currently oversees a team delivering community street audits and a school walking project that reaches over 100,000 pupils across Scotland. In 2018, he helped to produce the second edition of the pedestrian pound to make the economic case for investment in walking. He has worked in policy and development roles for charities and social enterprises since 2002: including Changeworks, Friends of the Earth Scotland, The Scottish Wildlife Trust and Help the Aged. His current work focuses on leading projects centred on walking to school, community capacity building and best practice around walking infrastructure. He has overseen research into sustainable transport in new housing developments, the future of high streets, and tackling inequalities related to the built environment.  He holds a degree in Town Planning from Heriot Watt University and has maintained a strong interest in transport planning and urban design throughout his career. He is currently a Trustee of the sustainable Transport charity Transform Scotland, advisor to Sustrans on funding decisions and Transport Scotland’s Road Safety Operational Partnership Group.  Previously served on the board of the Edinburgh Community Solar COOP and WWF Scotland’s Advisory Committee.
